Understanding Anxiety
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the mind and body’s natural response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived danger. Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. It can help us prepare for challenges, stay alert, and respond to situations that require attention.
However, anxiety can become overwhelming when worry, fear, or nervousness feels difficult to control or begins interfering with everyday life. Anxiety may show up emotionally, physically, mentally, or behaviorally.
Common signs of anxiety may include:
• Excessive worrying or overthinking
• Feeling restless, tense, or “on edge”
• Racing thoughts or difficulty quieting the mind
• Difficulty concentrating
• Irritability or feeling easily overwhelmed
• Trouble sleeping
• Rapid heartbeat or feeling short of breath
• Muscle tension, headaches, or stomach discomfort
• Avoiding situations because they feel uncomfortable or frightening
• Seeking frequent reassurance
• Feeling like something bad is going to happen
Anxiety does not mean that something is wrong with you. It is often your brain and body trying to protect you. Therapy can help you understand what is triggering your anxiety and develop healthier ways to respond to it.
How Can Therapy Help With Anxiety?
Therapy provides a safe, supportive environment where you can explore your anxiety without judgment. Rather than simply learning how to “get rid of” anxiety, therapy can help you understand it, manage it, and feel more confident in your ability to handle difficult emotions and situations.
In Therapy, You May Learn To:
Understand Your Anxiety
Identify triggers, patterns, thoughts, and behaviors that contribute to anxious feelings.
Challenge Unhelpful Thoughts
Learn to recognize anxious thinking patterns such as catastrophizing, assuming the worst, or constantly questioning yourself.
Develop Coping Skills
Practice breathing techniques, grounding exercises, relaxation strategies, mindfulness, and other tools to calm your mind and body.
Build Emotional Regulation Skills
Learn how to tolerate uncomfortable emotions without feeling controlled by them.
Reduce Avoidance
Work at a comfortable pace to face situations you may have been avoiding because of anxiety.
Increase Confidence
Develop a stronger sense of self-trust and learn that you can handle uncertainty, challenges, and uncomfortable moments.
Improve Daily Functioning
Work toward better sleep, concentration, relationships, communication, work performance, and overall quality of life.
The Goal of Therapy
The goal is not necessarily to never feel anxious again. Anxiety is a normal human emotion. The goal is to help you feel more in control of your responses, understand what your anxiety is communicating, and develop the skills to move forward even when anxiety shows up.
You don't have to face anxiety alone. Therapy can help you feel calmer, more confident, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges.
