Is it burnout or depression?

Depression and burnout can look similar but have different causes and needs.

Depression is a medical condition that affects mood, thinking, energy, and daily life. Signs include ongoing sadness or numbness, loss of interest, sleep or appetite changes, trouble concentrating, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. It can happen without a clear cause and usually needs professional treatment (therapy, medication, or both).

Burnout comes from long-term stress at work or in a role. Main signs are emotional exhaustion, detachment or cynicism about the role, and feeling less effective. Symptoms are tied to the stressful situation and often get better with changes at work, better boundaries, or self-care. Burnout usually doesn’t cause steady low mood outside the stressful role or suicidal thoughts.

If problems are mainly work-related, burnout is more likely. If they affect most areas of life and bring deep hopelessness, depression is more likely. A licensed therapist can help tell which it is and suggest treatment. If you’re thinking of harming yourself, get immediate help.

(PNS) Parasympathetic nervous system reset

The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) controls rest and digest functions, conserving energy, lowering heart rate, boosting digestion, and relaxing muscles. It induces calm, balancing the sympathetic fight-or-flight response. In therapy, activating the PNS via deep breathing, mindfulness, and relaxation helps reduce anxiety, stress, and trauma by promoting calm and emotional regulation. Telehealth therapy in Illinois uses these techniques to support clients with anxiety and depression effectively.
